"Scardino freezes field at Speedworld"

The Inaugural Monsoon Madness
Motorsports Party presented by NAPA
Auto Parts was held at Speedworld
Raceway Park on August 12. A capacity
crowd witnessed the California
Independent Funny Car Association run
under the lights. A total of 20 teams
made the trip to Arizona to try and qualify
for the 16 car show.
Qualifying started with a very hot and
slippery race track. The air temperature
was well above 100F and with the
monsoon rains hitting the area the night
before the track was a little green. The
AMP Motorsports team did not let the
track conditions effect them as they ran
an off the trailer 7.53 to take the pole
after one session.
The second session featured the
Perma-Cool Burnout Challenge. Mike
Irwin, Jack Beckman and Pete Ortiz Jr
all did incredible burnouts. Once the
smoke had cleared though the fans
picked Pete Ortiz Jr with his 1000 foot
burnout as the winner of the Perma-Cool
Burnout Challenge. All the teams who
ran in the second session improved their
performance and after 2 sessions the
field qualified as follows:

Eliminations started with 4 cars, Chill Factor, AMP Motorsports, Sweet Justice, &
Strange Behavior battling for position in the championship chase. Jim Carter entered
the race as the points leader by the slimmest of margins. Carter would face the # 1
qualifier Paul Peterson in a race that would have large points implications. Peterson
got the holeshot with a .039 light and then ran a 7.540 to defeat Jim Carter's 7.591. # 2
in points Chill Scardino would face Dean Oberg in the first round and took the win with
a 7.68 to Oberg's pedaling 7.947. Mike Irwin was up against Glenn Tucker. Tucker got
the starting line advantage however could not hold Irwin off. Irwin ran a 7.599 to
Tucker's slowing 9.582. Top Fuel Pilot Jack Beckman made an appearance driving the
Ground Zero car. Beckman would get a first round bye win Joe Powell broke on the
burnout. Beckman cut an .014 light with a 7.524 to win the Enderle Quick Reaction
Award and the Good Vibrations Best Package Award. Dan Levitt defeated Becky
Sylvester who red lit. Levitt ran a 7.59. Tony Doca faced David Holmes and Doca got a
huge starting line advantage however both cars had trouble getting down the track.
Holmes out pedalled Doca and got the round win with a 9.93 to Doca's 12.359. Burnout
Challenge winner Pete Ortiz Jr faced Jamie Leppanen. Leppanen got the hole shot and
defeated Ortiz with a 7.618 to Ortiz's 7.618. The final pair featured Mike Halstead and
CIFCA new comer Will Martin. Martin got the starting line and would take the win light
with a 7.90 to Halstead's 7.95. Halstead's car suffered damage in the shut down area
when the car went slightly off course and dug into the grass.
The second round started with another huge points match up. Mike Irwin and Paul
Peterson faced off. The race was over at the line as Peterson went red and threw away
a 7.53 to Irwin's off pace 7.72. Jack Beckman faced Dan Levitt and the race was won at
the line when Levitt went red giving the win to Beckman who ran a too quick 7.48. David
Holmes faced Jamie Leppanen and got the win when Leppanen broke on the burnout.
Scardino advanced when he defeated Martin with a 7.56.
In the Semi's Beckman would face Irwin. Beckman went red and threw away a 7.522
while Irwin got the win and ran a 7.516. The second semi featured David Holmes vs.
Chill Scardino. Scardino ran a 7.549 to defeat Holmes off pace 8.51.
The winner of the final would leave Speedworld as the points leader. Both cars were
almost dead even out of the gate, Scardino went .058 to Irwin's .059 then Scardino ran
a dead on 7.506 to defeat Irwin's 7.567. Scardino leaves as the points leader with Irwin
in a close second with 2 races remaining in the season.
