Final called after unfortunate on track incident, Tildahl wins race & championship
|
The 36th Annual Governor's Cup at
Sacramento Raceway was a race that was
overshadowed by incidents both on and off
the track. By the end of the event all who
attended remembered what life is really
about.
There were only two cars left in the hunt for
the 2005 championship. The AMP
Motorsports team came into the race with a
2 1/2 round lead over Dennis Murphy's
Ground Zero.
Qualifying was run in excellent conditions.
The track was well prepared and the air was
unseasonably cool. Most cars ran well
below the 7.50 index in the first session
although there were a few who were able to
calm the cars down enough to run the
number. Chill Scardino ran an off the trailer
7.507 which would hold up to take the pole.
Championship contender Jeff Tildahl ran a
7.519 to grab the second spot. Charles Ware
ran a 7.524 to claim the number 3 spot. Eddy
Plaizier in the Team ACE Firebird was fourth
with a 7.547 followed by points leader AMP
Motorsports with a 7.570. After 2 rounds of
qualifying the order was as follows:

With the field set eliminations would become real interesting for the 2 points contenders.
The AMP Motorsports team had to win second round to win the championship. The Ground
Zero team had to win the race and have the AMP Motorsports team lose at or before
second round. Both teams were on the same side of the ladder. The Ground Zero team
ended up getting a first round bye when their competition Ken Breneisen hurt the car on
the second qualifying attempt and could not make first round. The AMP Motorports team
ended up facing Tony Doca in John Stanton's Desert Star Trans Am. Peterson would get
the hole shot and win with a 7.58 to a quicker but losing 7.50. This would pair Tildahl vs.
Peterson in the second round. The points championship would start to be decided here.
Other first round winners included Chill Scardino who defeated Jamie Leppanen when
Leppanen's car would not go into reverse. Mike Irwin defeated Charles Ware with a 7.510
and a .014 reaction time. This would hold up to take the Good Vibrations Best Package
Award. Eddy Plaizier defeated Shaun Bryan with a 7.56 to Bryan's 7.82. Dan Whiteman
defeated Andre Pegues in his last CIFCA event. Mike Halstead got a single when Becky
Sylvester could not make the call due to a rear end failure.
The second round started with Tony Doca returning as quick loser from the first round. He
would end up facing number 1 qualifier Chill Scardino and Doca would get the round win in
a double break out situation. Scardino ran a 7.44 to Doca's 7.48. Mike Irwin would use a
.008 light to defeat Dan Whiteman and pick up the Enderle Quick Reaction Award. Eddy
Plaizier defeated Mike Halstead on a hole shot as Halstead ran a 7.53 to Plaizier's 7.55. The
last pair of the second round paired off Jeff Tildahl and Paul Peterson. Both drivers knew
the championship was at stake and both cut great lights. Tildahl was .012 to Peterson's
.033. By half track Peterson was way out in front however Tildahl would pull along side at
1000 and pass Peterson to take the win. Tildahl ran a 7.557 to Peterson's 7.559.
So all the AMP Motorports team could do now was wait. The semi's paired up Tony Doca
vs. Mike Irwin and eddy Plaizier vs. Jeff Tildahl. In the first pair Irwin would go red giving the
win to Doca who ran a 7.93 as he shut off early knowing he got the round win. In the
second pair Plaizier would face Tildahl. The race was won at the tree as Plaizier went red
giving the win to Tildahl who shut it off early running a 7.74.
The final was set to be Jeff Tildahl vs. Tony Doca. An unfortunate on track event caused
the final round never to be run. Todd Simpson in his Top Sportsman car had a horrific
crash which caused the racing action to halt and the remainder of the race to be
cancelled. Per the CIFCA rule book the win was to be awarded to the previous rounds
quick et. In this case Jeff Tildahl picked up the event win and in the process won the 2005
Championship by less than 1 round of racing. The bad luck did not stop there as Willie from
the Team Windjammer Team was hit by a drunk driver as he left the race track on his
motorcycle and was seriously injured. Special Thanks goes to the Scardino Family for
helping Team Windjammer in this terrible accident.
All in all the 2005 was a success. CIFCA had it's closest points battle in history. Over 29
teams ran this year and as we look forward to 2006 the future only looks brighter.
