AMP Motorsports Takes Season Opener
The California Independent Funny Car
Association opened it's 22nd Season at
the 25th Annual Funny Car Fever held at
Sacramento Raceway Park. 18 teams, 4
of which were new to CIFCA braved a
mixed weather report and made the trip
to qualify for a spot in the 16 car show.

Qualifying began on Friday afternoon
under cool and crisp conditions. All the
cars were shooting for the Cogswell
Marine & Motorsports Revolving Qualifier
Bonus.
Mike Irwin in the Strange Behavior came off the trailer with a strong 7.518 to take the
early pole in qualifying. However the last car of the session was the AMP Motorsports
team who came up and ran an awesome 7.511 to take the pole after one session of
qualifying. The second session started out with a surprise. Becky " The Rattler"
Sylvester shocked the field and threw down the gauntlet with a near perfect 7.505
totake the #1 qualifying spot away from the AMP Guys. With Becky running the number
early in the session the remaining cars had to take a chance and most ran too quick.
Cars like Joe Powell in his Street Lethal Cutlass ran a 7.15. Bryan Bruhn in his Auto Air
Colors Camaro ran a too quick 7.27. Defending Series champion Jack Beckman in
Dennis Murphy's Ground Zero got into the show on the last session with a 7.59. The
AMP guys came back up and took a shot at getting back the #1 spot and just barely
missed with a 7.497. Mike Irwin won the Perma Cool Burnout Challenge

Eliminations opened up with a few upsets. Defending Series champion Jack Beckman
was out in the first round when he ran a too quick 7.49 against Bryan Bruhn which
allowed the Auto Air Colors car to advance in their CIFCA debut. CIFCA rookie Sloan
Taylor in his Star Motorsports Olds defeated CIFCA veteran Dan Whiteman when
Whiteman lost the blower belt and slowed to a 9.53. Jamie Leppanen who finished 4t in
series points last year was defeated by Jim Carter in his 57 Chevy when Carter cut a
.004 light to win on a hole shot. Brent Jones in the Lawless Racing Olds ran the #1
qualifier Becky Sylvester. Sylvester was late as Jones got the starting line advantage
however Sylvester Drove around him on the other end to take the win with a 7.56 to
Jones' 7.65. Charles Ware, Chill Scardino and Mike Irwin also advanced.

The second round started with Becky Sylvester vs. Bryan Bruhn. Both drivers were
dead late at the tree however in the end Sylvester took the win with a 7.62 to Bruhn's
slowing 7.71. The next pair pitted Chill Scardino vs. Mike Irwin. The race was over at
the hit as Irwin went red and gave the win to Scardino who ran a 7.62 to Irwin's better
but losing 7.59. Jim Carter got a single when Sloan Taylor accidentally hit the kill switch
after the burnout giving Carter a single. The final pair had Charles Ware facing the AMP
guys. Pete Peterson cut a .028 light to get the hole shot victory over Ware.

The Semi's had Scardino vs. Sylvester and AMP vs. Carter. Scardino was able to get
almost a tenth out of the hole and ran a great 7.549 to take the win. Pete Peterson cut a
.011 light against Carter coupled with a 7.548 to take the win as Carter got out of shape.

The final had two very evenly matched cars. Both drivers had been on their game all
day. However in the final Peterson upped the ante with a .002 light and a 7.515 to take
the win, the Enderle Quick Reaction Award, and the Good Vibrations Best Package
Award.
