Montana Express rolls through Fallon
Brent Jones made over an 1100 mile tow to Fallon, NV to compete in the CIFCA event  held
there on June 17. When you make a tow that far you had better be on your A game when
you roll in the front gate. Jones looked stout all weekend. Here is how the event unfolded.

Qualifying began in less than ideal conditions. A track that was very rough and very hot
caused some teams difficulty in getting their car down. However one car that jumped right
to the top was Pete Ortiz Jr. in the Outcast 2 car. He pedaled his 97 Olds Cutlass to 7.52
out of the box to claim the early # 1 qualifier spot.

The second session featured the Perma-Cool burnout challenge which was easily won by
Pete Ortiz Jr who did almost a full quarter mile burnout. In other qualifying action CIFCA
new comer Joe Powell drove his Street Lethal Oldsmobile to the # 1 qualifying spot with a
almost dead on 7.507. Brent Jones ended up in the # 3 spot which netted him the Cogswell
Marine and Motorsports Revolving Qualifier Award.

Eliminations started out under cooling conditions. The first pair pitted Mike Irwin against
2005 CIFCA champion Jeff Tildahl. Tildahl who needed to make a move in points if he wants
to repeat as champion red lite by .001 and gave the win to Irwin. Points leader Chill
Scardino who was fighting a fuel system problem all weekend qualified ninth and faced
Brent Jones. Jones went .003 on the tree coupled with a 7.512 to put Scardino on the
trailer. Jones also received the Enderle Quick Reaction Award and Good Vibrations best
package award for that run. CIFCA president Jamie Leppanen got a single when Pete Ortiz
Jr. could not make the call due to heat stroke. Jim Carter, Joe Powell, and Becky Sylvester
also advanced.

In the second round Mike Irwin faced Joe Powell who had a first round single. Irwin got the
holeshot and took the win with a 7.56 to Powell's shut off 11 second run. Paul Peterson
driving the Freeway Building Materials Avenger faced Becky Sylvester in the second round.
Peterson got the hole shot and took the win with a 7.56 to Sylvester's 7.83. Jamie
Leppanen got a single when quick loser Chill Scardino developed a fuel leak and was shut
off. Brent Jones defeated Jim Carter with a 7.53 to Carter's 7.50.

The semi's pitted Leppanen vs Peterson and Jones vs Irwin. In the first pair Leppanen
went .022 on the tree to Peterson's .036 and then ran a 7.52 to Peterson's 7.55 to take the
round win. Jones went .047 on the tree which forced Irwin to Chase him down. Irwin broke
out with a 7.45 to give the win to Jones with his 7.53.

The final had two drivers in it that had been deadly on the tree all day. At the tree Leppanen
went .010 to Jones' .039 light. Leppanen was out in front all the way down track. In a top
end pedal fest Leppanen took the strip first but was too quick. Leppanen went 7.489 to
Jones 7.512.
